What an odd and scary time these last several months have been. Some of us have mostly stayed at home in an effort to help reduce the spread of covid-19. Others have placed themselves and maybe even their families at great risk, working right on the front lines, providing essential services, support and medical care. No matter where or how we spent this time, I would bet that each of us has been deeply touched in some way by the experience. And most of us will change in ways we have yet to realize.
As I begin to awaken from this ‘locked-down’ mindset, I find myself evaluating and then re-evaluating the wisdom of each step forward. I also find myself wondering whether I want to return to living the same ‘normal’ life I lived before, doing the same things just as I was doing them before. Perhaps I’ve changed, and there is another path for me to follow, another doorway to pass through. But where might that path lead, and what do I hope to find on the other side of that door?
This pondering; this conscious and yet sub-conscious, spiritual and yet physical soul space between now and next, between known and unknown is liminal space.
In keeping with the times, our first book is a collection of essays published by Richard Rohr’s Center for Action and Contemplation entitled ‘Liminal Space’.*
In the preface, Vanessa Guerin quotes William Blake –
In the universe, there are things that are known, and things that are unknown, and in between them, there are doors.
